Henri Dallier

Henri Édouard Dallier ( born March 20, 1849 in Reims, † 23 December 1934 in Paris) was a French composer and organist.

Life

Dallier was at the age of 16 years organist of the choir organ of Notre- Dame de Reims cathedral; Organist of the main organ was at this time Jules Grison. Already in 1867 he composed his first organ sonata. In 1870, he competed without any formal training for the first time to participate in the competition for the Prix de Rome, but was rejected. In 1872 he entered the Conservatoire de Paris, where he took organ lessons with César Franck and composition lessons with François Bazin. In 1878 he earned an honorable mention in its fourth participation at the Prix de Rome with the cantata La fille de Jephté. In the same year he was awarded the Organ Competition at the Conservatoire first prize.

Then Dallier assumed the position of organist at the Parisian church of St -Eustache, which he held until 1905. Here it stood from 1879 a large, built by Joseph Merklin organ available. His reputation as an important organist soon spread, and he was, inter alia, the inauguration of the Cavaillé -Coll organ in the parish church of Notre- Dame d' Auteuil invited ( with Charles -Marie Widor ) and the opening concert at the concert organ at the Palais du Trocadéro to the World Exhibition of 1889. Camille Saint- Saëns dedicated to him in 1895 his third Prelude and fugue.

When Gabriel Fauré had as the new head of the Conservatoire de Paris to give up his position as organist at La Madelaine, Dallier became his successor at the viermanualigen Cavaillé -Coll organ of the Church. In this role he played at the funeral, both of Camille Saint -Saëns in 1921 as well as by Gabriel Fauré in 1924.

Besides his work as an organ virtuoso and composer Dallier also dedicated classes. At the École Niedermeyer Joseph Noyon was one of his students. At the Conservatoire de Paris from 1908 to 1928 he was professor of harmony.

In addition to organ music composed Dallier also piano pieces, chamber music (including a string quartet and a piano quintet ), a symphony and choral works. The Detroit Chamber Trio in 2005 he took a trio Dalliers from 1898 on.
