Henry Beaumont Herts

Henry Beaumont Herts ( * 1871 in New York City, † 1933) was an American architect.

Life and work

Herts studied at Columbia University, but he left without a degree. He also went with Bruce Price in teaching and he studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris and at the Universities of Rome and Heidelberg.

In 1900 he founded with Hugh Tallant ( 1870-1952 ), who had also studied in Paris, Herts & Tallant 's office, which quickly became known for its theaters. Tallant was responsible for the artistic designs and has become a specialist in acoustics, Herts was responsible for the technical design and economic issues. The New Amsterdam Theatre in New York in 1903 was her first big hit, followed by the Fulton Theatre ( later Helen Hayes Theatre, demolished 1982), the Gaiety Theatre (demolished in 1982 ), the Liberty Theatre ( closed 1933), the Lyceum Theatre, New German Theatre and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Herts perfected the Kragträgerkonstruktion, which made it possible to build spectator stands without the use of window pillars.

The business partnership with Tallant ended 1911. Herts built with his assistant Herbert J. Krapp nor the Booth Theatre, the neighboring Shubert Theatre and the Longacre Theatre. 1915 Krapp left office.

Herts also designed the mausoleum of the Guggenheim family in the Salem Fields Cemetery in Brooklyn.

1928 went Herts health reasons to retire. He died in 1933.

His estate is located in the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University in New York.
