Henry Chadwick (theologian)

Sir Henry Chadwick ( born June 23, 1920 in Bromley, London, † June 17, 2008 in Oxford ) was a British theologian and church historian and professor emeritus of Patristic Theology, University of Cambridge.

Chadwick studied at Cambridge music and theology and taught from 1959 to 1969 as Regius Professor of Divinity and Canon of Christ Church Oxford, followed from 1969 to 1979 as Dean of Christ Church in Cambridge. In the following years he held until 1983 the Chair of the Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge.

In 1991 he received the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize. Chadwick was a member of the British Academy, a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the Philosophy and History Class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences ( BAdW ), multiple theological honorary doctorates, among others the universities of Jena (1997) and Uppsala and Knight of the British Empire. In 1998, Chadwick became an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences in Erfurt profit. Sir Henry Chadwick was also a member of the German order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts.
