Henry Christy

Henry Christy ( born June 26, 1810 in Kingston upon Thames, † May 4, 1865 ) was a British banker, who has gained in self-funded research also made great contributions as an archaeologist and anthropologist. In close cooperation with Édouard Lartet he founded after the division of the joint excavations Paleolithic ( Old Stone Age ) in Old and Upper Paleolithic. 1861 presented Christy and Lartet together a first chronological system of Stone Age cultures, the two authors were based on the principle of index fossils of paleontology:

  • " Period of the great cave bear " ( = Neanderthal Time)
  • " Period of the mammoth " ( = older Upper Paleolithic )
  • "Period of the rentier " ( = Magdalenian )
  • " Period of the aurochs and the polished ax " ( = New Stone Age).

This paleontological inspired classification was expanded in 1867 by Gabriel de Mortillet who used purely archaeological terms for the first time ( using typical locality ) to the chronological outline. Christy's death in 1865 prevented a significant participation in the volumes of Reliquiae Aquitanicae, an anthology in English, which summarizes all the results of excavations in Aquitaine. The two volumes ( text volume volume of plates ) were published posthumously and edited by Édouard Lartet.
