Henry Enfield Roscoe

He was the son of the Barristers Henry Roscoe and his wife Maria, daughter of the businessman Thomas Fletcher. Roscoe attended the University College in London. After studying in Heidelberg he worked under Robert Wilhelm Bunsen, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. He took over in 1857 the chair of chemistry at Owens College in Manchester. Important Aspects including photometry ( Bunsen - Roscoe law) and spectral analysis as well as the chemistry of the transition elements tungsten and vanadium.

In 1863 he married Lucy Potter († 1910), daughter of Edmund Potter. Beatrix Potter was his niece.

In 1863 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society, in 1873, the Royal Medal awarded him. In 1884 he was knighted for Knight. In 1882 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
