Henry Fitzhugh

Henry Fitzhugh ( born August 7, 1801 in " The Hive ", Washington County, Maryland; † August 11, 1866 ) was an American merchant, businessman, and politician from New York. In addition, James G. Birney and Gerrit were Smith, both U.S. presidential candidates, his brother in law.

Career

Fitzhug Henry was the son of Colonel William Fitzhugh, Jr. (1761-1839), one of the founders of Rochester, New York, and Ann ( Hughes ) Fitzhugh ( 1771-1829 ). The family moved in 1816 to an area of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. On December 11, 1827 Henry married Elizabeth Barbara Carroll ( 1806-1866 ), sister of Charles H. Carroll, of Groveland, New York.

He decided on a career in politics when he was elected in 1849 in the New York State Assembly, where he represented the Oswego County. Then he worked as a conduit Commissioner from 1852 to 1857 and was from 1851 to 1854 on the ballot of the Whig party.

Henry was buried in Williamsburg Cemetery in Groveland.
