Henry Sherwood (congressman)

Henry Sherwood ( born October 9, 1813 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, † November 10, 1896 in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1817, Henry Sherwood moved with his parents to Catharine, New York, where he attended the public schools. During the Texas War of Independence in 1836, he served in the Army of Texas under the command of Sam Houston. In 1840 he settled in Wellsboro. After studying law and his 1847 was admitted as a lawyer, he started to work there in his new profession. In his new hometown, he was also elected mayor. He joined the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1870, Sherwood was in the 18th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of the Republican William Hepburn Armstrong on March 4, 1871. Since he has not been confirmed in 1872, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1873. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Sherwood was president of the railroad company Wellsboro & Lawrenceville Railroad and the Pennsylvania Division of the Pine Creek Road. He died on November 10, 1896 in Wellsboro, where he was also buried.
