Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort

Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort, KG, PC ( * 1629; † 21 Januar 1699/1700 ) was an English peer. From 1646 to April 3, 1667, he was known as Lord Herbert, he succeeded his father as Marquess of Worcester.

On December 2, 1682 Somerset was awarded the newly created Dukedom of King Charles II. It was a recognition of his services to the king: "having been eminently serviceable for the king since his most happy restoration, in consideration thereof and of his most noble descent from King Edward III by John de Beaufort, eldest son of John of Gaunt by Catherine Swynford ".

Somerset was included in the Order of the Garter 1672, he was Privy Counsellor on April 22, 1679. He also led the Office of the Lord President of Wales.

Later refused Somerset King William III. the oath of allegiance.

Family

Henry Somerset married on August 17, 1657 Mary Capell, daughter of Arthur Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham, a sister of Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex, and widow of Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp. They had three sons and four daughters together:

  • Henry Somerset, Lord Herbert, died as a child;
  • Charles Somerset, Marquess of Worcester (Dec 1660 - July 13, 1698 ), military and politicians;
  • Lord Arthur Somerset.
  • Lady Mary Somerset, Lady of the Bedchamber, married in second marriage with James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, (1 son, 2 daughters )
  • Lady Henrietta Somerset, first marriage with Henry Horatio O'Brien, Lord O'Brien ( 1 son (Henry O'Brien, 8th Earl of Thomond ), 3 daughters ), second marriage to Henry Howard, 6th Earl of Suffolk;
  • Lady Anne Somerset, married to Thomas Coventry, 2nd Earl of Coventry, (1 son )
  • The fourth daughter probably died young.

Somerset's son Charles died before he could inherit his father's title; the dignity therefore passed to his son Henry.
