Her Majesty's Australian Ship

HMAS stands for Her Majesty's Australian Ship and the prefix of the Australian naval units. Should the Queen be followed by a king, it will change to His Majesty's Australian Ship. Many of the major Australian naval bases also wear this symbol, as for example, the HMAS Stirling, a base of the Royal Australian Navy on the west coast of Australia near the city of Perth.

The acronym is derived from the British Her Majesty's Ship ( HMS), as the monarch of Britain 's monarch of Australia at the same time.

Ships that carry this current part of their name, are subject to the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Navy. King George V issued in 1911, the decision that the ships have to carry this prefix from now on.

Many other naval forces of Commonwealth countries bear variants of the " HMS", such as the Canadian HMCS ( Her Majesty's Canadian Ship) or the New Zealand HMNZS ( Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship).
