Heraclea Minoa

Heraclea Minoa was an ancient city on the southern coast of Sicily; she lay at the mouth of the river Halykos near the present-day Montreal Allegro, about 35 kilometers northwest of Agrigento. It was initially an outpost of Selinus ( Herodotus 5, 46), was conquered from Carthage and was later border town of Agrigento. It went through contract 405 BC Carthage over and was recovered by Dionysius I of Syracuse, but went back to 383 BC Carthage back. Since then, the coins that bear their Semitic names, Ras Melkarth, are common. At this time Heraclea Minoa was an important border fortress. Here Dion landed 357 BC, when he attacked Syracuse. The Agrigentans brought the city back 309 BC, but lost it again soon Agathocles. At times, she was also in possession of Pyrrhus.

At the entrance there is a small Antiquarium. Here findings are shown by the excavations.
