Herbert Bednorz

Herbert Bednorz ( born September 22, 1908 in Gliwice, † April 12, 1989 in Katowice, Poland) was bishop of Katowice.

Life

The second child ( seven sisters) by Joseph Bednorz and Anna nee Ruda attended elementary school and high school in Gliwice. 1922 the family moved to Katowice. After graduation in 1927 he entered the seminary in Krakow and studied theology at the local Jagiellonian University. On 26 June 1932 he was ordained by Bishop Stanisław Adamski priest. He studied abroad Social Sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven and economics at the Sorbonne in Paris. He dealt with the social teaching of the Reformers Luther and Calvin.

On 4 May 1950 he became Pope Pius XII. appointed coadjutor with right of succession to the ailing bishop Stanisław Adamski in the diocese of Katowice; the same time, he was the titular the titular Bulla Regia. He was consecrated on 24 December 1950 by the Diocesan Bishop Stanislaw Adamski; Co-consecrators were the bishop of Czestochowa Teodor Kubina and the auxiliary bishop in Katowice Juliusz Bieniek.

His episcopal motto was: " Pax hominibus bonae voluntatis " ( " Peace on earth to men of good will " ) from the Gloria of the Mass.

1952 arrested and interrogated by the secret police, he was removed from office with other bishops and expelled from the diocese. He took refuge with the Sisters of Mary in Poznan. In 1956 he returned to Katowice. He participated in the Second Vatican Council and in the last session a member of the Committee on the Laity. After the death of Bishop Adamski on November 12, 1967, he became bishop of Katowice.

The achievement of his 75th birthday, he offered on April 23, 1985 Pope John Paul II 's age-related resignation to the Pope accepted on 3 June 1985 with the appointment of his successor Damian zimon.

His final resting place he found in the crypt of the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice.
