Herbert Biberman

Herbert J. Biberman ( March 4, 1900 in Philadelphia, † June 30, 1971 in New York City ) was an American screenwriter and film director. He was known primarily for his affiliation with the Hollywood Ten and because of his twisted 1954 film " Salt of the Earth " ( " Salt of the Earth " ), acting by striking Mexican-American mine workers in New Mexico.

Life

Biberman, who came from a Jewish family, wrote film stories and screenplays for popular films like King of Chinatown (1939; R.: Nick Grinde ) When Tomorrow Comes (1939; R.: John M. Stahl ), Action in Arabia (1944, R.: Léonide Moguy ), with Anne Froelich of The Master Race and Elliot Paul to New Orleans (1947; R.: Arthur Lubin). In The Master Race he himself led Director, as previously in the films One Way Ticket (1935 ) and Meet Nero Wolfe ( 1936).

In 1930 he married actress Gale Sondergaard. From this marriage two children were born.

As of 1947, the Committee for Un-American Activities under the filmmakers began to identify. Biberman and the other Hollywood Ten refused to statements in court over an affiliation to the Communist Party of the United States and were sentenced to prison for contempt of court. Biberman was serving a prison sentence of six months. While Edward Dmytryk was willing to cooperate with the committee, refused the others and were placed on the so-called "Hollywood Blacklist" the film studio director.

Biberman worked after his release from prison, therefore, independently and there was the movie Salt of the Earth ( Salt of the Earth ), to the Michael Wilson wrote the story. Its name was as the producer Paul Jarrico, film composer Sol Kaplan and other stakeholders on the blacklist. The film was classified by the Library of Congress as " culturally significant " and as archived in the National Film Registry, also from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 1954 Biberman was awarded at the International Film Festival Karlovy Vary with the Crystal Globe for the film and received the 1956 French Étoile de Cristal in the category Best Foreign Film awarded. At the International Film Festival of Cannes 1969, his film slaves was shown.

He died of a bone cancer. His brother Edward (1904-1986) was a noted artist.
