Herbert Blaize

Blaize was born in 1918 in Cariacou in Grenada. In 1953 he founded the Grenada National Party as a rival to Grenada United Labor Party ( GULP ) by Eric Gairy. 1957 Blaize was as minister of trade and supply a member of the Grenadian government. In 1960 he was Head of Government ( Chief Minister ), but lost this position again in 1961 to Eric Gairy. After Gairy in 1962 resigned, Blaize again in 1962 head of government and remained so until 1967.

In 1976, Blaizes center-right party, together with the New Jewel Movement left a strategic alliance against Gairys GULP. This alliance broke when Maurice Bishop in 1979 a revolution took power. Blaize withdrew from politics and stayed until 1983 in Cariacou. After the invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops and their allies in October 1983 Blaize won in the 1984 election with his to the New National Party United Party 14 of 15 seats.

Blaize was so 1984 Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Interior and National Security.

Blaizes government pursued a harsh economic policies and a close military alliance with the U.S.. His leadership style has often been described as authoritarian and criticized. When he died in 1989 he was very unpopular; His resignation was often required.
