Herbert E. Brekle

Herbert Ernst Brekle ( born June 11, 1935 in Stuttgart ) is a German typographer and linguist.

Life

Brekle worked from 1951 to 1957 as a typesetter, proofreader, and printer. Then he studied from 1958 to 1963 English, Romance Languages ​​and Philosophy at the University of Tübingen, where he took off his doctorate in 1963. In 1969 the habilitation also at the University of Tübingen, where he worked for English Philology at Hans Marchand at that time as a research assistant at the Seminar; in the years 1967-69 he was supported by a postdoctoral fellowship from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

In 1969 Brekle the appointment to the Chair of General Linguistics at the University of Regensburg, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. In 1974-75, he held a visiting professorship at McGill University in Montreal (Canada), followed by a further ten years later at the Université de Paris VII ( 1984-85 ). From 1984 to 1986 Brekle practiced also from the post of chairman of the German Society of Linguistics.

In addition to his academic work, Brekle has been active in politics, where he has held various offices: in 1960-61 he was Chairman of the Student Council and the National Association of Baden -Württemberg Association of German student bodies. From 1972 to 1978, again from 1990 to 1996 was Brekle member of the Council of the City of Regensburg, and from 1978 to 1982 Member of the District Day of Upper Palatinate. Between 1978 and 1986 he also served as Chairman of the circle group Regensburg the Federal Nature Conservation in Bavaria.
