Herborn Castle

The Herborn Castle is situated above the town of Herborn in the Lahn- Dill-Kreis and emerged from the former " castle Herborn ".

History

The Herborn Castle was built in the late 12th century as a motte castle with a moat and was connected to the city walls of Herborn. 1251 was renewed and closed like a converted early 14th century. It was 1307/12 first mentioned. The castle was the center of Herborner Mark, who held the Counts of Nassau as a fief of the Landgrave of Hesse.

1584 was the Count Johann VI. Founded by Nassau- Dillenburg "High School" located in the castle; but it was postponed after a few years in the old city hall of Herborn. The castle was used thereafter only occasionally as a secondary residence or widow's seat.

From 1806 it was unused and neglected rapidly. 1929-31 it was restored by Ludwig Hofmann.

Current usage

Today, the Herborn Castle is the seat of the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, a direct successor of the High School Herborn.

In the castle an important library is housed, which includes about 68,000 titles. Of these, approximately 10,000 titles from the period before 1900, and is thus an important historical collection of books, even of printed works from Herborn's historic printing (eg Corvin ).
