Heritage Square Museum

The Heritage Square Museum is an open air museum in Los Angeles, California, where the development of architecture in California is shown on the time of the American Civil War to the beginning of the 20th century. The site is located at the Pasadena Highway.

During the 1960s, many Victorian buildings were demolished in Los Angeles. The members of the citizens' initiative Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission established the Cultural Heritage Foundation to some important buildings from destruction save. The buildings have been transported from their original locations on the museum grounds.

Featured homes

On the grounds of the museum are eight buildings:

  • Perry Mansion - The house was built in 1876 as a residence for the businessman William Perry in the Mount Pleasant Street. Created in 1975 brought to the museum grounds and there restored by the Colonial Dames Society of America. The house has Greek and Italian styles.
  • Hale House - It is considered the most photographed building in Los Angeles. It was built in 1887 in a mix of different styles. It was before it was purchased in 1906 by James Hale, has been moved to another location. In 1970 it was purchased by the Foundation for a dollar and brought to the museum grounds.
  • Valley Knudsen - The house was built in the late 19th century in Lincoln Heights and has an unusual for California French mansard roof.
  • Carriage Barn - The barn was built in 1899 in the Queen Anne style with Gothic influences. In 1981, the barn was brought to the museum grounds and is now used as a workshop for the restoration.
  • Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church - The church built in 1897 has both Gothic and Queen Anne style elements. The floor plan is in Akronstil.
  • Ford House - The building was built as part of a larger system of identical houses in 1887 in Downtown Los Angeles. The owner of John Ford was a famous wood carver. He decorated the house with many of their own work.
  • Palms Depot - was erected in 1887 as part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. From 1911 to 1953 it was used by the Pacific Electric Railway as the train station. Since 1963 it is a listed building, but fell anyway. The citizens' initiative save -our- station brought the building in 1975 in the museum.
