Heritiera

Heritiera is a plant genus in the family Sterculiaceae ( Sterculioideae ) within the family (Malvaceae ). Home areas are the tropical areas of Asia, Africa and Australasia. Some types of wood used.

Description

Heritiera species are trees or shrubs. Mature trees often have buttress roots. The aboveground plant parts are usually covered with star-shaped hairs ( trichomes ). The alternate arranged leaves are usually pedunculated and have a simple or feathery divided leaf blade. Most are located at the base of petioles early falling stipules.

In pendent, zymösen or paniculate inflorescences many flowers are borne. The usually unisexual flowers are radial symmetry and fünfzählig. The four to six sepals are fused bell-shaped or jug -shaped. There are no petals present. In the male flowers the Androgynophoren are short. In one or two circles are 4-15 stamens. In the female three to five contiguous carpels and staminodes are present. Each carpel has only one ovule. The very short style ends in a very small scar.

The woody or leathery fruit has edges and does not open at maturity. The seeds have no endosperm.

The genus Heritiera in 1789 with the type species Heritiera littoralis Aiton by William Aiton in Hortus Kewensis; or, a catalog ..., 3, pp. 546-547 situated. The genus name honors the French botanist Charles Heritiera Louis L' Héritier de Brut Elle ( 1746-1800 ). Synonyms for Heritiera Aiton are: . Argyrodendron F.Muell, Tarrietia Flower, Sutherlandia R.Br. not JFGmelin 1792 In 1812.
