Herman Saftleven

Herman Saftleven (also: Sachtleben Leven ) (* 1609 in Rotterdam, † January 5, 1685 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch painter.

Saftleven, pupil of his father, formed more by the Antwerp landscape painters since 1633 and was based in Utrecht. He left the city, apart from a trip to the Rhine, until his death no more.

The city government of Utrecht commissioned Saftleven after the storm of 1674 to document the damage caused at the Utrecht Dom.

His executed with meticulous finesse images representing Rhine landscapes in the majority and are characterized by a bluish own fragrance, are present in most galleries. Saftleven also delivered admirable etchings. His brother Cornelis Saftleven was also a painter.
