After he was dismissed in 1870 for disciplinary reasons from the seminary, Schell moved to the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg. There he worked with Franz Brentano, who resigned in 1879 from the Catholic Church, to his philosophical dissertation under the title The unit develops the psychic life of the principles of Aristotelian philosophy, which he submitted in 1872 but Jacob Sengler in Freiburg and in 1873 published.

However, an ordinary appeal to the Chair of dogmatics failed due to the intervention of the bishop. 1895/96 he published the first two volumes of his Gesamtapologetik under the title The divine truth of Christianity. Both his writings reform Catholicism as a principle of progress (1897 ) and The new time and the old faith (1898 ) made him internationally known, but earned him an indexing. Schell was thus personally very concerned, he submitted to this decision and remained faithful to his church. Between 1901 and 1905 he published religion and revelation, Yahweh and Christ and Christ.
