Hermann Anschütz

Hermann Anschütz ( born October 12, 1802 in Koblenz, † August 30, 1880 in Munich) was a German painter.

Life and work

Already as a student he got his first lessons in painting and went as soon as it was his family financially possible at the Art Academy in Dresden. There he became a student of history painter August Hartmann.

Supported by this, changed Anschütz 1822 at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf to Peter von Cornelius, who in 1826 took him along with his classmates Wilhelm Kaulbach and Adam Eberle for some major contracts to Munich. There Anschütz was his first independent work The Judgement of Midas present to the public the following year. King Ludwig I of Bavaria was enthusiastic and financed Anschütz 1830 to 1831 a study trip to Naples. After his return he became a lecturer at the Munich Art Academy and designed there together with Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Alexander Strähuber the painting and drawing lessons.
