The Hermann Castle with bridge to Russia

The Hermann Castle ( Hermanni linnus estonian ) is a medieval fortress in Narva, Estonia. It lies on the banks of the River Narva.

The fortress was founded in the mid- 13th century by the Danes. In 1345 the fort was sold by the Danes along with Narva and East Estonia to the Teutonic Knights. After its dissolution it was from 1558-1704 in Swedish and then Russian-owned. As the majority of Narva it was almost completely destroyed in World War II. In the meantime restored fort now houses a museum.

Narva was the easternmost castle of the Teutonic Order. Directly opposite, on the other bank of the river, lies the Russian fortress Iwangorod.
