Hermann Fehling (physician)

Hermann Johannes Karl Fehling (* July 14, 1847 in Stuttgart, † November 11, 1925 in Baden -Baden ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician.

Life and work

Hermann Fehling, was born as the son of a chemist Hermann Christian von Fehling, a professor at the Technische Hochschule in Stuttgart. After attending high school in Stuttgart Fehling studied at the Technical University of Natural Sciences, then medicine at the University of Tübingen and the University of Leipzig.

He participated in the Franco-German War and was awarded the Württemberg Medal of Merit. In 1872, he joined as an assistant doctor at the University Hospital Leipzig. There he received a doctorate in med. Study tours have taken him to Vienna, Prague, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. In 1876 he qualified as a professor in Leipzig.

In 1877 he was appointed as a lecturer at the Wurttemberg State midwifery school in Stuttgart. In the same year he took over the management of the school. 1883 Fehling received a teaching position at the University of Tübingen. In 1887 he was appointed to the chair of obstetrics at the University of Basel. As director of the Women's Hospital, he designed a new building, which was regarded as one of the most modern in the world. Fehling 1894 was appointed full professor of obstetrics and director of the Women's Hospital of the Friedrich - University of Halle. A professor at the University of Tübingen, he refused 1897. Fehling 1900 took up an appointment at the Kaiser- Wilhelms- University of Strasbourg. 1908/ 09 he was its rector.

As a general assistant medical director, he coordinated during the First World War, the activities of the converted hospitals to reserve university hospitals in Strasbourg. He was expelled with the other German professors of the university in late 1918, and settled in Baden -Baden. There, died Hermann Fehling 1925 at the age of 77 years. Karl Franz ( a gynecologist) was his son.

The Fehling's test tube, a tube containing ( pyometra ) is inserted into the cervical canal to drain the pus with a purulent inflammation of the uterus, was developed by Fehling and bears his name.

Writings (selection )

Hermann Fehling founded in 1877 together with Heinrich Fritsch Zentralblatt for gynecology. He has published about the metabolism in the fetus, the emergence of the rachitic pelvis, called the pregnancy kidney, the castration of osteomalacia and eclampsia.

Honors

In 1884 Fehling was elected a member of the Leopoldina. Between 1907 and 1909 he was president of the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics and briefed the Congress 1909 in Strasbourg. He was appointed by the Company later an honorary member.
