Hermann II, Landgrave of Thuringia

Herman II ( born March 28, 1222 Creuzburg; † January 3, 1241 ibid ) was Landgrave of Thuringia from 1227 to 1241 from the family of Ludowinger.

Life

The son of Louis IV and Saint Elizabeth, daughter of the Hungarian King Andrew II, was born at the castle Creuzburg in the same town on the Werra, near Eisenach. Hermann was only five years old when his father died on a crusade, and stood up in 1239 under the guardianship of his uncle Henry Raspe. In the same year he married Helene of Brunswick- Lüneburg, daughter of Otto I " the child ", Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg.

Hermann died in 1241 at the age of only 19 years. Some historians claim that he was poisoned. Hermann left no children. His widow went 1247/1248 a second marriage to Albert I, Duke of Saxe- Wittenberg, a. Were Buried Hermanns remains in Reinhardsbrunn Monastery, the Monastery of the house Ludowinger.

The French biographer Jean de Joinville reported in his work Vie de Saint Louis, that the court of King Louis IX yard. ( Saint Louis) of France have arrested the son of St. Elizabeth of Thuringia. The actual date was June 24, 1241, ie several months after Hermann's death, on the occasion of a great Hoftages in Saumur, was present at the Joinville. He had observed how the queen mother Blanche of Castile the eighteen year old kissed his forehead, after she had heard that this was done by the boy's mother often. It is possible that this was a propaganda trick Joinville to suggest a closer family ties between Ludwig and Elisabeth, by depicting Blanka in its action as an incarnation of Elizabeth and the son who is not named, could stand for Ludwig.

But the specified Joinville Age of Elizabeth child also points to an error of the aged chroniclers back (who had started his work in 1305 ). It could have been the June 1240, as Hermann was still alive and was eighteen. Hermann's younger sister Sophie was promised at the relevant time in its sixteenth year and the Duke of Brabant, who in turn was connected by kinship with the French royal house.
