After graduating from the Stuttgart Eberhard -Ludwigs -Gymnasium, he studied from 1960 to 1966 in Tübingen and at the University of Berlin history and political science. In Tübingen, he was commissioned by the local student council, the student newspaper " notes " out.

He began in 1966 as an editorial assistant and worked most recently as a " senior editor " of the political departments of the mirror. As a result of a dispute with the publisher Rudolf Augstein for editorial participation left Gremliza the end of 1971 the mirror. Since 1974 he is the monthly magazine out concretely. In addition to the editorial he published there regular columns, in which he deals critically with positions in the mass media. He also performs at irregular intervals interviews with personalities from politics and culture.

In 1989 he resigned from the SPD; one occasion was that the members of the Bundestag for the SPD spontaneously imposed after the wall opening on November 9 in the Bundestag with the deputies of the CDU, CSU and FDP to sing the German national anthem. In his opinion, this presented a parallel to May 17, 1933 is when the Social Democratic deputies had also levied on the occasion of " peace speech " Adolf Hitler to the singing of the national anthem - in common with the Nazis.

It was in 1987 publicly to have written his book as a ghostwriter for Günter Wallraff The lead story on the " Bild" newspaper.

Concrete for which he edited the magazine he writes monthly at least a political editorial ( " Gremlizas column" ) and a critique of language ( " Gremlizas Express" ), in which he described the underlying in the spirit of Karl Kraus from recent statements by politicians and other public sentiments extracted.

His relationship with the religions portrays Gremliza exemplified in the column " Allah out!" When he writes: " I insist on the right, indeed the duty of the Enlightenment, Allah to respect so little and to ridicule by forces as any other gods, of Jesus C. to L. Ron Hubbard. Freedom of religion, which I think is the freedom of religion. Just to clarify. "
