Hermann Osthoff

Hermann Osthoff ( born April 18, 1847 in Billmerich in Unna, † May 7, 1909 in Heidelberg ) was a German linguist.

Life

Osthoff studied Classical Philology, German, Sanskrit and comparative linguistics in Berlin, Tübingen and Bonn. 1869 PhD in Bonn. During his time in Bonn, he became a member of the fraternity Alemannia to Bonn. From 1870 he worked as a teacher in Kassel. 1875 was the Habilitation in Leipzig. In 1877 he was associate professor of comparative linguistics and Sanskrit in Heidelberg. In 1878 he was appointed Professor ibid.

His research focus was the Indo-European studies. In addition to Karl Brugmann and August Leskien Osthoff was one of the principal founders of the neo-grammarians.
