Hermann Schlichting

Hermann Schlichting ( born September 22, 1907 in Balje, † June 15, 1982 in Göttingen ) was a German fluid mechanics.

Life and work

Hermann Schlichting studied from 1926 to 1930 Mathematics, Physics and Applied Mechanics at the Universities of Jena, Vienna and Göttingen. In 1930 he received his doctorate in Göttingen under Ludwig Prandtl with a paper "On the plane slipstream problem " and put in the same year the state exam for teaching in secondary schools in mathematics and physics from. The meeting with Ludwig Prandtl has influenced the life of Schlichting crucial. He entered the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen and dealt a 1931-1935 mainly with problems of flows with friction, but in this first time in Göttingen, he has also begun to deal with wing aerodynamics. In 1935, Schlichting went to the Dornier plant in Friedrichshafen. There he planned the new wind tunnel, and took him after a short construction period. He gained valuable experience in the field of aircraft aerodynamics. He followed at the age of 30 years in 1937 to teach at the Technical University of Brunswick, where he was appointed a full professor in 1938.

After taking up his post in October 1937, Schlichting has taken care of the structure of the under construction Aerodynamic Institute in aviation training center at Braunschweig- Waggum airport.

In his honor, which occur during laminar-turbulent transition Tollmien - Schlichting waves were named.

After reaching the age limit Schlichting became Professor Emeritus on September 30, 1975 at the TU Braunschweig. At the same time, he retired as director of the Aerodynamic Research Institute Göttingen ( AVA). Since the appeal process had not been completed for his successor at the TU Braunschweig, he was asked to continue the service shops to hold office until his successor.

The representation of his Chair of Fluid Mechanics ended on 30 April 1978. His successor, Boris Laschka took effect on May 1, 1978 his ministry at TU Braunschweig and the Institute of Fluid Mechanics at.

After his retirement Schlichting lived in Göttingen. He has worked there and completed the eighth edition of his book " boundary-layer theory " with a lot of energy. He has not seen your show and therefore presents his scientific legacy dar. this edition

He was a member of the Academic Flying Group Braunschweig.
