Hermengild Li Yi

Hermengild Li Yi OFM (李毅) (* November 11, 1923, † 24 May 2012) was a Chinese religious cleric and underground bishop of Changzhi in Lu'an (潞安). He spent 20 years in communist prison and was regarded as a model of the Chinese clergy.

Life

Li Yi received by his theological and philosophical training on February 6, 1949, the ordination. He worked as a pastor, including for migrants from northern China in Wangde and as a priest in Changzhi. From 1951 to 1955 he completed his studies in history at the Tianjin University. With the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966 he was placed under arrest by the communist rulers and came only in 1985 and is released.

1998 Hermengild Li Yi was appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of North China Changzhi. He was loyal to the Pope, not recognized by the Chinese state underground church belonging.
