Hermite Islands

The Hermite Islands (Spanish Islas Hermite ) are located in the extreme south of Chile, some 80 km south of Puerto Williams an uninhabited group of islands in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Administratively, the islands belong to the municipality of Cabo de Hornos in the Región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena de la. The Yámana were called the islands Samajani, today they are named after the Dutch admiral Jacques L' Hermite.

Geography

The island group includes seven islands and numerous rocks. Largest and 516 m above sea level and the highest island is Isla Hermite in the west of the group, another major islands are Isla Herschel and Isla Deceit in the east. The most famous island, however, Hornos, in the south of the group; is on her Cape Horn, at the southern tip of South America. North of the Hermite Islands are the Wollaston Islands. Both island groups are separated by the Canal Franklin, ( from Isla Herschel to Isla Freycinet ) to 1.5 km (from the Isla Herschel to Isla Wollaston ) measures at the narrowest points within 1.3 km.

In the west, the Bahía Nassau separates the islands (especially the Isla Hermite ), 16 km away from the False Cape Horn on the Hardy - peninsula of the island Hoste. To the south lies the Drake Passage, which separates South America from the Antarctic continent. 81 km southwest lie the Diego Ramirez Islands, including the southernmost point of South America.
