Hornos Island

Hornos is sometimes considered the southernmost point of America - called - and thus the inhabited continents. In fact, it is only the southernmost island, which is immediately upstream of South America. The southern islands are American, however, about 100 km to the south-west to, belonging also to Chile Diego Ramirez Islands.

On Hornos, there is a lighthouse whose crew is replaced every three months. Furthermore, there are a small chapel and a post office hut, and a meteorological station ( Estación de Cabo de Hornos Meteorológica ).

Until the late 18th century lived on Hornos and adjacent islands nor the Yámana ( Yaghanen ), a nomadic tribe who inhabited the islands of the area. With them ended on Cape Horn the millennia- long hike Indian peoples that crossed descended, passed by Mongolian peoples of East Asia, the Bering Strait and Alaska from the whole American continent, to find after about 20,000 km journey, at the extreme southern tip of South America their home.
