Hero Omken adopted his mother 's surname. Although this was unusual, but quite possible in Ostfriesland. He sat down on the one hand of politics from his father, who had always been a loyal follower and friend of the Cirksenas. On the other hand, he distanced himself so of the children of his father's second marriage, which he refused to co-regency, although it was actually has testamentary by Sibet Attena.

His half-brother Ulrich von Dornum, the presented claims to the co-regency in Harlingerland, Hero conceded just a financial settlement. Even otherwise, he was not much on the will of his father, but he had decreed that his children should the Cirksenas keep faith. On the contrary, Hero took every opportunity to harm the Count Edzard of East Frisia, especially as this was in 1514 involved in the Saxon feud and came under imperial ban.

Edzard retaliated after his rehabilitation, in turn, with robberies and attempted to enforce its promised by the emperor to the claims Harlingerland. Hero Omken could preserve the independence of the Harlingerland but still. After his death in 1522 his son Balthasar von Esen became his successor.

His daughter Onna (Anna ) ( † after 1559 ) was with Otto III. married of Rietberg. After the death of Balthasar Esen comes as to the Counts of Rietberg.
