Herrad of Landsberg

Herrad of Landsberg (also Herrad of High Castle, Herradis Landsbergensis ) (* 1125-1130; † July 25, 1195 on the Mount Sainte-Odile in Alsace ) was an abbess and writer of the High Middle Ages.

Herrad was in the period 1167-1195 Abbess of the Convent High Castle on the Mount Sainte-Odile and gained great fame as an author and illustrator of the Hortus Deliciarum ( "Garden of Delights ").

The Hortus Deliciarum who summarized the spiritual and secular knowledge of the Middle Ages for the nuns of the convent Hohenburger in Latin, was the first demonstrably authored by a woman encyclopedia.
