Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument

The four- quadrant model of the brain ( HBDI, Eng. Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument) is a model for thinking style analysis of Ned Herrmann ( 1922-1999 ). The model states that different people may have different ways of thinking. According to this model you can - without any value - assign people different categories, or measure the expression of their style of thinking in the direction of a category. It thus is a modern type theory based on the neurosciences. It can be useful for the choice of employment, for the assembly of teams or for the selection of employees.

Foundations and historical background

The four- quadrant model of the brain based on a three- Some brain ( " Triune Brain" ) known findings of Paul D. MacLean and the hemisphere theory of Roger Sperry.

  • Left brain: culture techniques (language, literacy, numeracy, writing), ratio, causality ( logic of cause / effect ), rules, laws, focusing on one point, analysis, attention to detail, science, sense of time, Deductive conclusion, order and structure
  • Right brain: body language, imagery, painting, colors, Holistic thinking, creativity, spontaneity, jumpiness, synthesis, overview, relationships, curiosity, play, risk, sense of space, inductive approach, imagination, intuition, feeling

In fact, this model has now been proven obsolete ( see hemisphere model).

Four-quadrant model of the brain by Ned Herrmann

On these two theories is based on the model of Ned Herrmann. It assigns different thinking styles of four different areas of the brain:

  • The left hemisphere: sequential, orderly, Figures, data, facts
  • The right hemisphere: parallel, chaotic, pictures
  • Cerebral ( think ), ie the area of the neocortex
  • Limbic ( feeling ), so in the "old mammalian brain ", which is after McLeary seat of the emotions.

His theory states that every person has different priorities in his thinking. Depending on what part weights, one belongs to one or more of the four groups represented by the four quadrants, with each main and different ways of thinking behavior characteristics in intro and Extravertiertem behavior:

  • A: The rational I - The Analyst: analytically Introvert: quiet, serious, concentrated
  • Extrovert: debating drilling, the thing walking on the ground
  • Introvert: controlled, often remains alone
  • Extroverted: dominant, organized people and events
  • Introvert: expressed nonverbally from mitmenschlich quiet
  • Extroverted: talkative, united to other shares with
  • Introvert: " Stand Down ", lives in his own world, turns his own bike
  • Extroverted: experimenting, brimming with ideas

Test instruments

Ned Herrmann had designed a building on his theory test on behalf of General Electric, with which one can measure the dominance of the quadrants in subjects. The test was Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument ( HBDI ) called and names legally protected. After retiring from General Electric Herrmann Herrmann founded the International Institute, which specializes in the distribution of the test and to this effect Consulting. There are other, also names legally protected names, eg in Germany under the name Herrmann Dominance Instrument (HDI or HDI). Scientific validation studies of various institutes were conducted for HBDI and confirm its validity.
