Herøy Church

The Herøy kyrkje is a church in the West Norwegian commune Herøy Fylke in Møre og Romsdal. It was consecrated on 16 February 2003 by bishop Odd Bondevik. The church belongs together with the likewise belonging to the municipality of Indre Herøy kyrkje in Stoksund and Leikanger kyrkje Leikong at the Norwegian State Church.

History

As the first Christian church in the community Herøy a stone church was in 1184 on the island Herøya, after which the community is named, built. Built in the Romanesque style " Mariakyrkje " was the main church of the Sunnmøre region. It was demolished in 1859 and replaced by a larger wooden church at about the same place. After the village Fosnavåg had become the center of the municipality, in 1916 this church was demolished and a new church in Fosnavåg built, which burned down on July 2, 1998. Numerous works of art were destroyed from the Middle Ages.

The present church

In 2003, the newly built Herøy was ordained kyrkje. It has 700 seats and a distributed on two floors total area of 2300 m². In the church there is also the parish church of Herøy.

Church Facilities

The artistic Church furnishings comes from Per Odd Aarrestad. The baptismal font was modeled after the destroyed in the fire baptismal font from 1572. Equipped with 1850 pipe organ was built by the German company Jehmlich organ building in Dresden and was consecrated on 30 November 2003.
