Herzogspitalkirche (Munich)

The Roman Catholic Duke Hospital St. Elisabeth Church is an independent convent church (monastery church) of the Munich Servitinnen.

Location

The Duke Hospital Church ( Herzogspitalstr. 7) is relatively in the middle of the set up by Duke Albrecht V Hospital in Hackenviertel the historic Old Town of Munich.

History

Duke Albrecht V 1555 had set up a hospital for his court personnel, the hospital was named Duke. The planning Heinrich Schöttels already envisaged a church in the center of the Duke Hospital, which received the patronage " St. Elizabeth ".

1727 Baroque building was inaugurated to plans by Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer. Especially in the 19th century, the miraculous image of the Sorrowful Madonna was said to have a miraculous effect, were celebrated so it here until the 20th century, pilgrimages, Bußgänge and thanksgiving services performed or; the best known example is Lena Christ. She describes in her biography " Memoirs of a superfluous", as she lay in gratitude for their engagement flowers in front of the Sorrowful Mary on the altar.

During the Second World War severely damaged the Duke hospital was demolished and replaced by a new building. The tower was restored, the nave replaced by a new building, designed by Alexander Freiherr von Branca 1956/57, which is distinguished by a decked out entirely in brick interior.

The tower of Herzog Hospital Church is registered as a historic landmark in the Bavarian monument list.
