Hevia

José Ángel Hevia Velasco (born 1967 in Villaviciosa ), known as Hevia, is a Spanish bagpiper and flautist from Asturias. He invented along with the computer programmer Alberto Arias and the technician Miguel Dopico the electronic bagpipes, and made the Celtic music traditions of his region popular worldwide. His music is characterized by Celtic and Middle Eastern rhythms and African chants.

Life and work

José Ángel Hevia comes from the small coastal community of Asturias in the northern Spanish coast. Even as a four year old he was enthusiastic about the bagpipes and dreamed of one day even to play music. During school and his studies, he practiced every day dealing with this instrument and was able to successfully participate in competitions several times. After completing his studies, he built several bagpipe schools, gave his knowledge and played in various ensembles. In 1999 he was reel by the title Busindre who could even place in the pop charts, internationally known.

Electronic bagpipes

Unlike a traditional bagpipes Hevia does not fill with air its MIDI bagpipes. A connected computer recognizes the different handles and reproduces the sounds of a bagpipe. About this instrument Hevia can also individually sounds of other instruments or produce another, such as from a flute, a violin or a saxophone.
