Acid -n- hexyl ester ( also: hexyl acetate ) is a chemical compound selected from the group of carboxylic acid esters.

Occurrence

Acetate, n - hexyl acetate is found naturally in apples and other fruits, as well as in alcoholic beverages.

Production and representation

Acid -n- hexyl ester can be obtained by esterification of 1 -hexanol with acetic acid.

Properties

Acetate, n - hexyl acetate is a colorless liquid with an aromatic odor, which is very slightly soluble in water.

Use

Acid -n- hexyl ester is used as solvent. It is especially suitable for dissolving of resins, polymers, cellulose derivatives ( cellulose acetate is, however, insoluble), fats and oils. Small amounts are used as a leveling agent in paints. Due to its sweet, fruity, pear- like odor, it is used in synthetic fruity flavors.

Safety

The vapors of acetic acid n- hexyl ester can form (56 ° C, ignition temperature 265 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
