History

The Gallic oppidum Larina was in the territory of the tribe of Allobrogians. After the conquest by the Romans, this area was a province of Gallia Narbonensis a center of Gallo- Roman culture. From this period dates the necropolis of Larina, now an archaeological park, one of the Monuments historiques. A consecration inscription for the Gallo-Roman god Mercurius Vellaunus has been found here. After the Roman withdrawal, the hillfort Hières -sur- Amby belonged in the Middle Ages for a while to Burgundy. In the Merovingian and Carolingian era the place retained its largely rural character. From the 10th century feudalism penetrated in this area.

The parish Hières was first mentioned in 1291 in a basic document of sale. The hamlet Marignieu, Saint Etienne and BOURCIEU, as well as the stronghold of Hières are known from the year 1300, the castle was later built on a headland in the north of the castle at the output of the Val d' Amby. This building was burned down during the French Revolution, the current buildings are modern reconstructions.

Until the mid- 19th century, agriculture and commerce cruise on the Rhône basis of the local economy. Two important for the surrounding area mills were in Bruine ( moulin Violet ) and Avaux ( moulin Avaux ). They were in operation until 1926 and was then the Société de la Soie de Paris ( a Parisian silk production) purchased.
