High Priest of Ptah

Who - cherep - hemut was an ancient Egyptian title and the name of the High Priest of Ptah. "Who - cherep - hemut " means " World's Greatest Head of craftsmen ", which in turn alludes to the importance of the god Ptah as the god of craftsmen. The Temple of Ptah were connected important workshops, had the supremacy of the High Priest of Ptah.

Background

The title " Who - cherep - hemut " is attested since the 2nd dynasty, but the exact reading and translation of the title is controversial. In the Old Kingdom the title seems to have still been no official high priest, but was the title of the head of the Memphite workshops. There was probably at this time two incumbents. It was only in the 6th Dynasty, it became a priest title, the incumbent often also bear the title Sem.
