The Hilo airport ( English Hilo International Airport ) is the airport of the city of Hilo on the island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

History

1927 approved the Hawaii Territory funds for the construction of airports in Hawaii, including $ 25,000 for an airport at Hilo. The inauguration of the airport took place in February 1928. 1929 took Inter- Iceland Airways passenger traffic between Hilo and Honolulu in 1934 was followed by the connection to the air postal network.

The Hilo airport has been continuously expanded, including with funds from the Works Progress Administration and the Civil Aeronautics Administration. 1938 had also refer to the prison whose occupants had evacuated the area for the start and runway during the construction of the airport, be relocated.

Upon entering the United States in World War II, the airport was taken over by the pioneers of the United States Army and expanded. 1943 took over the Navy control of the Hilo Airport, but was continued to be used in parallel by the United States Army Air Corps. On April 19, 1943, the airport in General Lyman Field was renamed in honor of Albert Kualii Lyman, the first Hawaiian who had been appointed brigadier general.

1946, operational control was passed back to the territory and determined in 1947 as one of three main airports for Hawaii. 1952, the airport was also formally transferred completely to the territory, in the same year began extensive extension work, which included a new reception building.
