Himmelpforten Monastery (Harz)

The monastery gates of heaven is a no longer existing Augustinian Hermits monastery, halfway between Hasserode ( a district of Wernigerode ) and Darlingerode.

History

The monastery was founded in 1253 by the Lords of Hartesrode in a sheltered wooded valley north-west of Hasserode. They chose this place because here were previously Wilhelmitenbrüder resident. The Augustinian operated among other fish and even viticulture. Himmelspforten was on August 6, 1517 attended by Martin Luther, where he met with his religious brother and friend, the Vicar General Johann von Staupitz, with whom he thereby also talked about the sale of indulgences. At the meeting recalled the memorial stone erected in 1917 Luther.

During the Peasants' War coveted peasants against the taxes and tithes on; after apparently fruitless negotiations, the first Cord Hoidop led by the monks, stormed on 30 April or on May 1, 1525 applied peasants under the leadership of Wernigeröder surgeon Wiardes, Jacob Schütte and Nöschenröder innkeeper Danzke the monastery and looted it. The monks fled, according to tradition, the monks now deposit said location near the Stony Run in the Upper Harz. Contrary to legend, the Economic and church buildings were not destroyed, but only " gepucht and spoliret " as the later retracted gefänglich peasant leader gave to protocol. The exiled monks moved under its new Prior Peter Gröning again to the monastery, the buildings including the churches were still in use for several decades, but fell steadily and were up in the middle of the 19th century almost completely removed and used as building material.
