HindIII

Hind III is an enzyme used in molecular biology for targeted cleavage of DNA. This enzyme belongs to the family of type II restriction endonucleases and was recovered in 1970 from the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae. Its molecular mass is 35 kDa. After dimerization HindIII cuts double-stranded DNA within the palindromic recognition sequence to form a 5'- overhang as follows:

5'- AAGCTT -3 ' 3'- TTCGAA -5 ' A 5'- AGCTT -3 ' 3'- TTCGA A-5 ' This formation of a comprehensive four nucleic bases 5'- overhang ( sticky ends ) can be exploited by HindIII DNA fragments in molecular biology also to facilitate concatenation ( ligation ).
