Hinterer Brochkogel

Rear Brochkogel from the northeast ( Taschachferner ) in winter

The Rear Brochkogel ( formerly called Pröchkogel ) is with 3628 meters, the third highest mountain in the white crest of the Oetztal Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Its peak point is hidden under Firn even in summer. It has the form of a flat pyramid, which sends distinctive ridges to the north, southeast and southwest. The mountain is accessible from the Breslauer Hütte and is regarded as a shorter alternative to wild tip. The first recorded ascent of the mountain by sources took place on August 2, 1858 by Albert Wachtler, later chairman of the section of Bolzano DÖAV. He was led by Leander Klotz from Vent.

Location

The mountain is located about eight kilometers in a straight line south-southwest of Mittelberg in Pitztal. Adjacent peaks to the east, separated by Mitterkarjoch ( 3468 m), the wild peak with 3772 meters of altitude, in the south, separated by the Vernagtjoch (3400 m), the 3565 -meter-high Front Brochkogel and to the west, separated by the Brochkogeljoch ( 3423 m), the Petersen peak with 3484 meters of altitude. The Rear Brochkogel is completely surrounded by glaciers. To the north is the accumulation zone of the Taschachferner, in the southeastern and southwestern Mitterkarferner the Hochvernagtferner. The mountain village of Vent is a good five kilometers to the southeast.

Bases and Ascension

In the mid-19th century, the mountain guide Leander Klotz offered from Vent -paying tourists to mountain trips to the glaciers and peaks of the area and recommended that all that he could not precisely estimate the rear Brochkogel as an alternative to more difficult -to-climb neighboring wild tip. The normal route, the easiest rise on the rear Brochkogel leads as high tour with the appropriate equipment along the southern ridge. The starting point is located at 2844 meters above sea level Breslauer Hütte. From the hut, the path runs in a northwesterly direction on a Steindaubenweg to Mitterkarferner, and then to Mitterkarjoch on the uppermost part of Taschachferner. Then the trail continues in a westerly direction over the Taschachfirn to approach the rocky Südostgrats over rubble and easier break climbing to the summit. Walking time is, according to the literature, about 3 ½ hours. Other points are the Taschachhaus ( 2434 m), the Vernagthütte ( 2766 m) and the Braunschweiger Hut at 2759 meters altitude.
