Hippalus

Hippalus was a Greek navigator and merchant who probably lived in the 1st century BC. It is believed that he was the captain of the ship of the Greek explorer Eudoxus.

Pliny the Elder claimed that Hippalus have not discovered the route to India, but the monsoon. To understand the significance of his discoveries, one must know that before Hippalus thought geographers India's coast is proceeding from west to east. He was probably the first to recognize the north-south course of the west coast of India.

In modern times, the lunar crater Hippalus was named after him. Hippalus is also one of the main characters in Lyon Sprague de Camp 's historical novel about Eudoxus with the English title The Golden Wind.
