Hippeis
Hippeis (Greek: ἱππεῖς (plural ) for " tab" ) was the name given to the second highest of the four sections of the population ( census classes) in the phase of Athenian democracy of the ancient Athenian polis. The classification was introduced in 594 BC by the constitutional reform of Solon.
As a member of this layer of the citizen was obliged to military service as a rider and had the possibility of access to higher offices.
The riders were in Sparta commanded by the Hipparmosten in Athens from Hipp arks ( = Reiter Colonel ).
The other three census classes were Pentakosiomedimnoi, Zeugiten and Theten.
