Histidine decarboxylase

Histidine decarboxylase ( HDC short ) is an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of the biogenic amine histamine and neurotransmitters by elimination of carbon dioxide ( decarboxylation) of histidine. As a cofactor involved in the reaction catalyzed by the enzyme bound to the prosthetic group of pyridoxal phosphate (Vitamin B6). The enzymatic decarboxylation of histidine by means of histidine decarboxylase, which is the first step in the degradation of the amino acid histidine and the last of the biosynthesis of histamine, occurs in animals, plants and many bacteria.
