Historic Compromise

Historic Compromise (Italian compromesso storico ) is the name given to a strategic political line that was by the then secretary of the Partito Comunista Italiano, Enrico Berlinguer, developed in 1973 and strongly advocated by Aldo Moro on the Democrats Christiana page. The purpose of this policy is to protect the democratic structures in Italy before a possible authoritarian regime and targeted attacks was (see also strategy of tension ).

As part of the Historic Compromise, the PCI decided to cooperate with the major democratic parties represented in parliament ( Christian Democrats, Partito Socialista Italiano). This collaboration should be sought to the broadest possible consensus within the democratic institutions and prevented by the implementation of a reform policy authoritarian tendencies.

Specifically, led the strategic line to a toleration of minority government of national solidarity under Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti in 1978. An unintended consequence of the historical compromise was the further radicalization of both left and right militant groups opposed to the adopted by the PCI course as either insufficient or the participation of the Communists sought to generally prevent the government.
