Historical Museum Bamberg

The Historical Museum Bamberg is located in the Renaissance the Old Court in close proximity to the imperial cathedral. It is next to the Ludwig Collection and the City Gallery Bamberg Villa Dessauer to the museums of the city of Bamberg.

History

The core of the Municipal Art Collections put Vicar Joseph Hemmerlein, of 1838, the city inherited its rich paintings treasures. With other foundations, bequests, purchases and loans increased, the museum was located until 1935 in the rooms of the former Benedictine monastery Michael Berg. Museum Collection

The Historical Museum Bamberg preserves a rich store of exhibits from the prehistoric times to the 20th century. The collection includes both prominent sculptures like the " Bamberger idols " as well as a number of important artworks and paintings from the Middle Ages to the present. Objects of the craft and the tradition containing Bamberger guilds, pageantry watches from the 16th to the 19th century or even coin collections from all art and cultural historical periods also part of the inventory.

Of international importance is the collection of scientific instruments, which expresses the rich spiritual tradition of university or research in Bamberg. The mostly astronomical and mathematical instruments from the 16th to the 18th century originated in part from various monasteries and colleges, such as the Jesuit college of Bamberg, from Banz, Ebrach, long home, and the Prince-Bishop's University. Also significant is the collection of Christmas scenes and cribs that annually attract at Christmas time visitors from all over Germany to Bamberg.

Permanent exhibitions

The permanent collection shows painting, graphics and crafts from the period of Romanticism to the early days. Of national importance are the collected objects for work of Schmidt's Institute porcelain painter in Bamberg. Furniture, musical instruments, vessels, equipment, textiles and jewelry from the Biedermeier period complete the picture.

Masterpieces from seven centuries were selected from the comprehensive circa 3000 painting urban art collection and provide an insight into the diversity of Bamberger collection. Works from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century are displayed in the former imperial court life in a picturesque half-timbered wing of the Renaissance. It begins with an introduction to the collection history of the city of Bamberg. In the following spaces, the paintings are compiled in extensive chronology and according to central themes of the history of art.
