History of Statoil (1972–2007)

Statoil ASA is a Norwegian petroleum company, which was founded in 1972 and since October 1, 2007 is part of StatoilHydro. The brand Statoil is in the retail business and operates gas stations in northern Europe and some Eastern European countries. Statoil is the largest oil company in the Nordic countries, Norway 's largest company, employing over 25,000 people. The headquarters is located in the city of Stavanger in Norway.

Statoil is one of the largest net sellers of crude oil in the world and is a major supplier of natural gas to the European continent. Statoil operates some 2,000 petrol stations in nine countries. The company carries out since mid-2004, Helge Lund, former CEO of Aker Kværner. Since the start of 2010, Statoil is independent again, as has been announced in late 2009.
