HMAS Newcastle (FFG 06)

The HMAS Newcastle ( FFG 06 ) is a frigate of the Royal Australian Navy ( RAN). It belongs to the Adelaide - class based on the American Oliver Hazard Perry class. The ship was involved, among others, the UN mission in East Timor in 1999 /2000.

History

The Newcastle was at the shipyard Australian Marine Engineering Consolidated ( since 2008: Tenix Defence to BAE Systems, being duly ) built in Williamstown in the state of Victoria. The keel was laid on 21 July 1989, which launched on 21 February 1992. The ship is since 11 December 1993 service. It was named like its sister ships to Australia's major cities, in this case to Newcastle in New South Wales.

From December 19 1999 to January 26, 2000, Newcastle was involved in the UN peacekeeping mission in East Timor, which took place under Australian leadership. 2005 was followed by a deployment in the Persian Gulf.

In early December 2006, the Newcastle the first of three Australian Navy ships, which was after the coup in Fiji on site to possibly evacuate Australian citizens from the country. The following two were the amphibious transport ship HMAS Kanimbla and HMAS Success of utilities. However, the use was not necessary, so that ships in late December of that year, returned back to Australia. In July and August 2010, the frigate took part in the biennial RIMPAC maneuvers held.
