HMS Erebus

The following ships of the Royal Navy HMS Erebus were called so far. Named after they were Erebus, the Greek god of Hades.

  • The first HMS Erebus was a 1807 from the stack overflowed Brander. In subsequent years, the ship was rebuilt several times, including on a rocket ship, and was equipped with 18 to 24 guns. In 1819 it was sold.
  • The second HMS Erebus was a bombard with 14 guns, which was launched in 1826. Together with the HMS Terror, she was involved in the James Clark Ross 1839-1843 conducted expedition to Antarctica. Both ships were in 1844 converted to steam drive and took part in the 1845 Arctic expedition under John Franklin. In 1848 they were abandoned enclosed near King William Iceland of ice.
  • The third HMS Erebus was launched in 1856 and was a floating battery. It was sold in 1884
  • The fourth HMS Erebus ran in 1864 as HMS Invincible from the stack. The ship belonged to the Audacious class and received in 1904 the name HMS Erebus. After a further renamed HMS Fisgard II in 1906, the ship sank on 17 September 1914.
  • The fifth HMS Erebus was a monitor and type of ship named after him Erebus class. The ship was launched in 1916 and was scrapped in 1947.
